Budgeting for Europe

Hey guys!

This post is probably the most important topic to consider when planning a trip to Europe: how much can you spend?  In all reality, the amount of money you’ll be able to spend won’t let you visit every place on your long list of destinations.  However, by planning SMART and well in advance, you can see as much as possible for your buck

I would definitely recommend setting a goal for your vacation.  You need to take into account how much you want to see and how long you want to stay overseas.  Be reasonable about the amount you want to save in a certain time.  Realistically, you won’t be able to save $5,000 in two months.  Rather, take a certain amount out of each pay check and put it into a savings account just for your vacation.  This way, you are less likely to spend it on other things.

Once you’ve decided how much you want to save, you’ll have an idea of how long you can spend on your grand adventure.  Myself, I’m hoping to spend 3-4 weeks in Europe, and travel to Ireland, Scotland, England, and Paris.  I know I want to get off the beaten path and see as much of the local areas as possible, so I’m going to have to budget to rent a car.

I highly recommend making an excel spreadsheet.  It will make it much easier to track what you need to save for each part of your trip.  These categories are pretty basic, so they should work for a lot of trips.  Feel free to add or remove categories to fit your trip.

Planning is Key to a GREAT Trip

I’ve wanted to go to Europe for a while now.  It all began when I was little and “Beauty and the Beast.”  That movie started what would be come an obsession with Paris and France in general.  Now, as I’ve grown older, that interest has expanded to greater Europe.  So, I decided I wanted to take myself to Europe when I graduate from college.

Naturally, I turned to the internet looking for information on HOW to plan this trip.  I’ve found the typical information about timelines, packing, budget, et cetera.  What I haven’t found is how to travel around Europe on a shoestring budget (which is basically what us college kids have to spend).  I don’t want to be forced to stay in cities where the hostels are simply to save money.  I want to still be able to get off the beaten path and find the really cool areas only the locals know about.

Then, I realized if I wanted to take a trip like this, I’m probably not the only one.  I truly hope this blog will help other college kids like me plan their trips, whether to Europe, Australia, or wherever else they may want to go.  This blog will cover anything and everything about planning a trip to Europe, from planning to packing to budgeting and anything else that is unearthed along the way.  If you’ve ever planned a trip to Europe and have tips to share or if you have topics you want covered, leave them in the comments below!
